Hello! I’m John, born and raised in Kendal — the gateway to the Lake District. I’ve spent nearly my entire life living and working in this stunning part of the world, with only four months ever spent outside of it.

Before launching Lake District Scene Tours, I worked as a chef for 10 years in hotels and restaurants across the Lake District, followed by 20 years as the owner of a successful cleaning business in the region. I also spent around 10 years offering private guiding in London on a part-time basis.

Now, I combine my love for storytelling, local knowledge, and hospitality to offer private tours that showcase the very best of the Lake District — from iconic destinations to peaceful hidden gems. Each experience is designed around your interests, with a relaxed pace and a touch of luxury.

As a lifelong local, I bring personal insight into the landscapes and legacies of figures like William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter, and John Ruskin. You’ll explore the places that shaped their lives, walk where they walked, and see the views that inspired their work.

Booking & Tour Information

How do I book a tour?

You can book your private Lake District tour through our website, by phone, or via WhatsApp. We recommend booking in advance to secure your preferred date.

Do I need to pay the full amount at booking?

No, we require a 50% deposit at the time of booking to secure your tour. The remaining balance must be paid at least 3 days before your tour date.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept bank transfer, and PayPal. Cash payments can be arranged upon request.

Can I customize my tour?

Absolutely! Our tours are fully private and bespoke, so you can personalize your itinerary to include the places that interest you most.

How far in advance should I book?

Advance booking is recommended to ensure availability and a seamless experience. However, we sometimes have last-minute availability.

Tour Logistics

Where do you pick up and drop off?

We offer door-to-door pickup and drop-off from hotels, Airbnbs, train stations, and other locations within the Lake District. We also provide pickups from Oxenholme and Windermere Train Stations. Pickup from locations outside the Lake District (such as Manchester, Liverpool, or London) can be arranged for an additional cost.

What type of vehicle will we travel in?

You’ll travel in a luxury Mercedes GLS Executive, providing comfort, style, and plenty of space to enjoy the scenic journey.

How long do the tours last?

Most full-day tours last approximately 8-9 hours, but we can adjust the duration based on your preferences.

What happens if it rains?

The Lake District is known for its unpredictable weather, but the landscapes remain beautiful in all conditions! We provide umbrellas, and we can adjust the itinerary if needed.

Do you offer half-day tours?

Yes, we offer half-day tours (usually 4-5 hours) for those with limited time. Please email us.

Are the tours suitable for children?

We don’t carry children under the age of five on our tours. Children under 18 need to be accompanied by an adult.

Do we have free time during the tour?

Yes, our tours include flexible time for exploring, taking photos, and enjoying refreshments.

Can we stop for food and drinks?

Of course! You can choose from local pubs, tea rooms, or Michelin-starred restaurants. Let us know your preference, and we’ll recommend the best spots.

Are there any walking or hiking elements?

Our tours are designed for all fitness levels, but we can include short walks to scenic viewpoints if desired.

Optional Extras & Customisation

Can I add a private boat ride to my tour?

Yes! We can arrange private boat cruises on Windermere, Ullswater, or Coniston Water for an unforgettable experience. Contact us.

Do you offer luxury add-ons like spa visits or fine dining?

Absolutely! We can incorporate luxury experiences, boat trips including spa visits, helicopter rides, and Michelin-starred dining.

Can I book a photography-focused tour?

Yes! If you’re a photography enthusiast, we can design a tour with the best scenic viewpoints and hidden gems for stunning shots.

Cancellations & Refunds

What is your cancellation policy?

We understand that plans can change, and we aim to be as flexible as possible.
  • Cancel at least 12 days before your tour: Receive a full refund.
  • Cancel 3 – 12 to days before your tour: Receive a 50% refund.
  • Cancel less than 72 hours before your tour or no-show: Unfortunately, no refund can be provided.
In certain cases, we may be able to reschedule your tour at no extra cost, subject to availability. Please contact us as early as possible if you need to make changes.

What if I need to reschedule?

We will do our best to reschedule your tour based on availability. Contact us as soon as possible if your plans change.

Accessibility & Special Requests

Are your tours accessible for guests with mobility issues?

Yes, we strive to accommodate all guests. Please let us know your needs in advance, and we can tailor the tour accordingly.

Do you provide multi-day tours?

We can create a multi-day itinerary to cover even more of the Lake District, We can reccomend private accommodations and dining experiences.

Do you offer gift vouchers?

Yes! Our gift vouchers make the perfect gift.

Health & Safety

Is travel insurance required?

While not required, we highly recommend travel insurance to cover unexpected cancellations or emergencies.

What safety measures do you have in place?

We can create a multi-day itinerary to cover even more of the Lake District, We can reccomend private accommodations and dining experiences.

Packing & Preparation

What should I bring on the tour?

We recommend comfortable clothing, walking shoes, and a waterproof jacket, as the weather can change quickly. A camera or phone for photos is also a must!

Is there Wi-Fi or charging ports in the vehicle?

Yes, our Mercedes GLS is equipped with Wi-Fi and USB charging ports for your convenience.

Weather & Seasonal Tours

Do you offer tours in winter?

Yes, we operate year-round, and the Lake District looks stunning in every season. Some routes may be adjusted due to weather conditions, but we always ensure an unforgettable experience.

Photography & Social Media

Can I take photos during the tour?

Absolutely! We encourage photography and can take you to the best scenic viewpoints.

Sustainability & Eco-Friendly Practices

Are your tours environmentally friendly?

Yes, absolutely. At Lake District Scene Tours, we care deeply about the environment and the stunning natural landscapes we explore. That’s why we use a modern, fuel-efficient luxury vehicle that meets the latest Euro 6 emissions standards, helping to reduce harmful pollutants.

We also drive responsibly, take care to minimise idling, and plan routes to reduce unnecessary mileage. As we grow, we’re actively exploring electric and hybrid options to make our tours even more sustainable in the future.

Terms & Conditions

1. Booking & Payment

⁠All bookings must begin with an enquiry submitted via our website www.lakedistrictscenetours.com, email, or phone.
  • Once your tour is confirmed, we will provide you with payment instructions to complete your booking.
  • Full payment is required to secure your booking, unless otherwise agreed in writing.
  • Prices are confirmed at the time of booking. Any late changes to your booking may incur additional charges.

2. Cancellation & Refund Policy

We understand that plans can change, and we aim to be as flexible as possible.

Private Tours & Transfers:

  • Cancel at least 12 days before your tour: Full refund
  • Cancel between 3 and 12 days before your tour: 50% refund
  • Cancel less than 72 hours before your tour or no-show: No refund
  • Cancellations must be made in writing via john@lakedistrictscenetours.com
  • In some cases, we may be able to reschedule your tour at no extra cost, subject to availability. Please contact us as early as possible if your plans change.

Weather-Related Cancellations:

  • Tours operate in most weather conditions. If conditions are unsafe (severe storms, flooding), we may:
    • Offer a rescheduled tour at no extra cost
    • Provide a full refund if rescheduling is not possible

3. Chauffeuring & Airport Transfers

Waiting Time:

  • Airport Pickups: 45 minutes included. Additional time is charged at £15 per 15 minutes.
  • Other Transfers: 15 minutes included. Additional time is charged at £15 per 15 minutes.

Delays & Cancellations:

  • We monitor flights and adjust accordingly.
  • If your flight is cancelled or significantly delayed, please inform us as soon as possible.

Luggage Allowance:

  • Standard allowance: 1 suitcase + 1 carry-on per passenger.
  • Oversized luggage must be declared in advance.

Child Seats:

  • Available on request and must be booked in advance.
  • For transfers, customers are asked to provide their own child seat as required by law.

Behavior & Cleanliness:

  • Clients must treat the vehicle and driver with respect.
  • A £100 cleaning fee applies for excessive spills, stains, or damage.

Smoking & Alcohol:

  • Smoking, alcohol, and disruptive behavior are not permitted inside the vehicle.

4. Rescheduling Policy

  • Requests to reschedule must be made at least 48 hours before the scheduled tour or transfer.
  • We will do our best to accommodate changes, subject to availability.
  • Some rescheduling requests may incur additional charges.

5.⁠ ⁠Passenger Conduct & Safety

  • Seatbelts must be worn at all times, as required by UK law.
  • Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and disruptive behavior are strictly prohibited.
  • The driver reserves the right to terminate the service without refund if passenger behavior threatens safety or comfort.

6.⁠ ⁠Vehicle Use & Driver Hours

  • ⁠Tour and transfer durations are limited to the agreed time.
  • Additional stops must be pre-arranged and may incur extra charges.
  • Drivers must comply with legally mandated rest breaks on longer journeys.

7.⁠ ⁠Refreshments & Scenic Stops

  • Tours include morning and afternoon refreshment stops featuring locally sourced treats from my Hamper.

Guests can choose between:

  • A scenic lakeside location or a historic inn with locally crafted beers and gins.
  • A refined afternoon tea experience at a luxury country house hotel or tea room.

8. Route & Time Variations

  • ⁠Routes may change due to traffic, weather, or unforeseen circumstances.
  • Tour extensions at customer request may incur additional charges.

9.⁠ ⁠Liability & Force Majeure

  • Lake District Scene Tours is not responsible for cancellations or delays caused by:
  • Natural disasters, road closures, or government restrictions
  • Third-party failures (e.g. hotels, restaurants, attractions)
  • We will make every reasonable effort to provide alternatives, but refunds are not guaranteed in such cases.
